What to expect from an effective mentor

The term mentorship goes as far back as the 18th century, and it is simply used to describe someone who imparts wisdom to and shares knowledge with a less-experienced colleague. Over time most people have come to realize that finding a mentor is an effective way to achieve their goals and accomplish more in life. In the world of research, mentorship is also very important. Research mentors share not only knowledge and skills but opportunities for growth such as grants.

However, not everyone is suitable for the job of being a mentor. In other to ensure that a good and effective mentor-mentee relationship is established, there are certain expectations that need to be met from both sides.

Experienced

A good mentor should have wide knowledge and experience in the area of interest to enable the mentee to navigate potential pits.

Networking

An effective mentor will generally link the mentee to a network of colleagues and collaborators.

Guidance

An effective mentor will not say things you want to hear, rather they will provide you with the things you need to hear. Achieving your goals requires a structured & rational plan. A mentee should feel comfortable sharing his struggles with his mentor.

Mutual Benefit

An effective mentor-mentee relationship creates an environment for growth, especially for the mentee.

Supportive and Compassionate

An effective mentor generally joins the mentee to celebrate their achievements and to stay on the course, even when they have setbacks or fail.

Reliable

Mentoring someone is a commitment both for time and resources. All mentors are busier than their mentees. However, an effective mentor should be willing to give you their full attention when needed.

Lifelong learner and teacher

The mentor you choose is most likely older and definitely more experienced than you. Their perspective is invaluable. It’s important to find a mentor who is a lifelong learner because they will be constantly enhancing their own skills and paying it forward by teaching and inspiring you.

A mentor should also respect the ideas of the mentee and not to go and implement the innovations of the mentee as his or her own without acknowledgement
